An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 struck the Greater New York Area in New Jersey at 10:18 PM local time on August 2, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 struck the Greater New York Area in New Jersey at 10:18 PM local time on August 2, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The residents said that tremors were felt across parts of New York City and Manhattan. Meanwhile, no damage or injuries have been reported so far.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 10 km depth at 02:18:52 UTC (10:18 PM local time on August 2), with the epicentre located approximately 18 km north-northwest of New York City and 13 km northwest of Manhattan.

As seismologists analyse the available data, the reported magnitude of the earthquake may be revised. Further information gathered could also lead U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake severity map, reported The New York Times.

Although the quake did not cause any reported damage or injuries, it briefly startled residents in New Jersey and New York City, many of whom shared their experiences on social media.

“A magnitude 3.0 earthquake is reported to have occurred in or near New Jersey. Tremors may have been felt in parts of New York City. NYC Emergency Management is monitoring for impacts and coordinating with agency partners,” NYC Emergency Management posted on X.
