Due to shortage of commercial gas cylinders, hotel and restaurant owners are forced to cook food on stoves.
The Center has directed the states to increase LPG supply amid the ongoing gas crisis in the country. From March 23, states will now be given 20% more gas than before. After this, the total supply to the states will reach 50% of the pre-crisis level.
Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, wrote a letter to the Chief Secretaries of all the states and union territories and informed about this. It was said that priority should be given to community kitchens, restaurants, dhabas, hotels and industrial canteens.
Besides, instructions have been given to provide 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders to migrant laborers on priority. At the same time, steps have also been taken to stop black marketing or misuse of gas.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has sent a letter to the states.
What is ‘pre-crisis level’?
‘Pre-crisis level’ means the time when the gas crisis had not started in the country. At present the states were getting very less supply, which has now been increased to half (50%) of the old demand. The US-Israel and Iran war has almost stopped the supply of crude oil and gas from the Middle East.

Dhabas, hotels and industrial canteens will get priority
This additional 20% gas will be given to specific sectors on priority. According to the letter of Dr. Neeraj Mittal, this supply will be available first to restaurants, dhabas, hotels and industrial canteens. The government’s objective is to minimize any impact on food services and the food industry.

Due to shortage of gas, Idli had to be made by lighting a stove at Nammaoru Coffee Katta Hotel in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bengaluru.
Relief to food processing and dairy sectors also
Food processing units and dairy sector will also benefit from the additional supply of gas. Along with this, subsidized canteens and outlets run by the state government or local bodies have also been included. Community kitchens have also been given priority, so that common people can easily get food.
Arrangement of 5 kg cylinder for migrant laborers
The ministry has also taken care of the needs of migrant labourers. It has been said in the letter that 5 kg FTL gas cylinders should be given to migrant labourers. Also, clear instructions have been given to the states to take strict steps to ensure that there is no black marketing or misuse of this excess gas.
This arrangement will continue till further orders
This new system will come into effect from March 23 and will continue until further notice. At present there is a shortage of LPG in the country, hence increasing the supply by 50% is being considered a big step. The government is keeping an eye on the situation, so that in future the supply can be brought back to normal level (100%).
Gas shortage due to Iran-America and Israel war
America and Israel jointly attacked Iran on 28 February 2026. Both countries launched massive airstrikes on several Iranian military bases, missile sites and nuclear facilities.
Many senior officials including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei were killed in these attacks. America named this campaign “Operation Epic Fury”.
After this war, tension increased in the Strait of Hormuz and supplies were affected. This route is very important for India, because about 80-85% of the country’s LPG comes from here. India is the world’s second largest LPG importer and imports more than 60% of the gas from outside.
Due to this, a situation like shortage of LPG was created in the country. However, the government asked people not to pay attention to rumors and clarified that there is no shortage of gas and oil in the country.
