Soon you will be able to convert your gas connection into any company like mobile number portability. Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has started preparing for it. This will provide more choice to consumers and will improve service.
Dealers can change now, but not the company
In October 2013, the UPA government launched a pilot scheme of portability of LPG connection in 24 districts of 13 states. It expanded it to 480 districts in January 2014.
But in that you could change the dealer inside the same company. For example, if you are a customer of Indane gas, it was not possible to go to another company.
This was because according to the rules, the cylinder can only be refilled from the company that has issued it.
Now this old limit will be removed in the new system. PNGRB is bringing inter-company portability. In this, you will be able to switch to any company.
Refill delayed customers trouble
- Customers have trouble with the operational problems of local distributors. Many times the refills are delayed by weeks.
- PNGRB says, the customer should have freedom of choice, especially when the price of the cylinder is the same.
- If the local dealer does not work properly, then the other company will get the facility to take refill from the nearest distributor.
When will the gas connection portability start?
PNGRB has currently sought feedback from Stakeholders, Consumers, Distributors, Civil Society. The last date to send comments is mid-October.
This will be followed by rules and guidelines, and the rollout date will be fixed across the country. Details are not final now, so the information about how to switch will also come later.
