Hotel staff said the crocodile, seemingly hungry, tried to climb the kitchen counter before resting in an armchair.

A 12-foot crocodile crawled into an award-winning hotel in Zimbabwe and attempted to enter its kitchen, shocking staff and guests alike.
Video of the incident, which took place on Friday, showed the apex predator casually making its way into the A’Zambezi River Lodge before climbing onto a counter, apparently in search of food.
Hotel staff and conservationists told local media the crocodile likely wandered in from the nearby Zambezi River.
‘Like A Paying Guest’
A British tourist told the Telegraph UK that the crocodile behaved much like a diner looking for service.
“Waiters told us how it had just walked in as if it was a paying guest and, when it couldn’t get a table, inquired at the desk. Finding nobody there, it actually tried to climb over it to get into the kitchens,” tourist John Richards was quoted as saying.
No Table, No Food, Straight To The Lounge
Richards added that, after failing to find food, the crocodile wandered off and made itself comfortable.
“It then went to an armchair and lay on it, then sauntered out to the decking where all the tables are, and with no grub on the menu settled down in a water feature out the front where it seemed happy,” he said.
“The waiter said there was 24-hour room service, but only for guests with rooms,” Richards quipped.
Nile Crocodiles: Built For Survival
The animal was identified as a Nile crocodile — one of nature’s most efficient predators. It can remain motionless for hours before striking with explosive speed, powered by one of the strongest bite forces on Earth. Sensitive receptors along its jaws detect even the slightest movement in water, allowing it to hunt with precision, even in darkness.
These carnivorous reptiles are capable of overpowering humans and are responsible for hundreds of deaths each year, often through ambush attacks.
Despite the tense situation, no one was injured.
After hotel staff alerted the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), rangers arrived and safely removed the animal.
“Security and staff made sure no guests went anywhere near it, and then rangers turned up with ropes and canvases and managed to secure and carry it away,” Richards said.
ZimParks spokesperson Luckmore Safuli confirmed the crocodile was safely released back into the Zambezi River.
“There were no human injuries or damage to property,” he said.
Hotel’s Take: ‘No Reservation, No Problem’
The hotel later leaned into the moment with a playful social media post.
“On Friday we had an early morning visit from an unexpected guest at Amulonga Restaurant. He was checking why room service was running late. No rules. No invitation. No reservation. This is the Zambezi – where wild means wild,” the post read.
The hotel added that its staff are well-trained to handle such encounters, noting that wildlife sightings are not unusual in the area.
