Following Viktor Axelsen’s retirement announcement, Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen penned an emotional tribute, calling the Danish legend “one of the greatest to ever play the game.”
Axelsen, widely regarded as one of badminton’s modern icons, called time on his career at 32 due to persistent back issues that made competing at the highest level increasingly difficult.
Reacting to the news, Sen’s message, posted on Instagram, stood out for its warmth and perspective.
“Badminton is blessed to have you, and it will remember you as one of the greatest to ever play the game, but what truly sets you apart isn’t just the champion you are, it’s the person you are, that stays far beyond matches and medals.”
From Training Partners to Olympic Rivals
Sen also reflected on their shared journey, one that evolved from training sessions to high-stakes clashes on the biggest stages.
“To go from training with you in Dubai to stepping onto one of the biggest stages like the All England Open and then facing you at the Olympics, it’s been an incredible journey. Happy retirement! All the best for what’s ahead.”
Their paths crossed memorably, including a high-profile showdown at the Paris Olympics semifinals and appearances at elite tournaments like the All England Open.
A Career That Redefined Greatness
Axelsen bows out with a résumé that speaks for itself: back-to-back Olympic golds in Tokyo and Paris, World Championship titles in 2017 and 2022, multiple European crowns, and a long reign as world No. 1.
He also played a key role in Denmark’s dominance, contributing to six European team golds and lifting the Thomas Cup.
Though he signs off ranked World No. 50, having last competed at the French Open in October.
