The New York Knicks are one win away from ending a 53-year championship drought.

The energy around the Knicks has been electric throughout the Finals. But as the city continues to celebrate its team’s remarkable run, a disturbing incident outside Madison Square Garden has cast a dark shadow over the festivities.

And now many are questioning whether the celebrations have crossed a line.

A 17-year-old boy was left in a coma after being brutally assaulted during the chaotic celebrations that followed the Knicks’ dramatic Game 4 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night.

According to the New York Police Department, the teenager was approached by a group of people and became involved in an argument related to the Knicks.

Police say one individual from the group allegedly began punching and kicking the teenager repeatedly in the head and body.

The victim later suffered a seizure and was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The suspect is currently being sought by police on allegations of gang assault.

According to local broadcaster WABCthe altercation may have started after a social media content creator began asking fans in the crowd which team they were supporting. One response — “Spurs in 7″ — reportedly sparked tensions, eventually leading to a fight in which the teenager became involved.

Police later told WABC that the victim has since stabilised, although the incident remains under investigation.

NY Under Scrutiny

The assault is the most serious episode in what has become an increasingly troubling series of incidents linked to the Knicks’ playoff celebrations.

Authorities confirmed that 56 people were either arrested or issued criminal summonses following Game 4.

Earlier in the evening, videos circulating on social media showed large groups of Knicks supporters surrounding the Spurs’ team hotel in Manhattan. Some fans were seen throwing objects in the direction of San Antonio star Victor Wembanyama, while others allegedly shone laser pointers at players and staff.

Wembanyama later downplayed the incident, saying it did not bother him.

Still, the scenes have raised fresh concerns about crowd behaviour as New York edges closer to what would be its first NBA championship since 1973.
