The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a sharp political attack on the Karnataka government, likening administrative actions in Chittapur to the authoritarian style of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The jibe came after the state administration’s refusal to grant permission for a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) route march in Chittapur, citing procedural and law-and-order concerns. BJP leaders accused the local authorities of creating a stifling environment that restricts cultural and patriotic events, calling the move an example of “emergency-style governance” reminiscent of the Congress party’s historic imposition of emergency at the national level.
What did the BJP say?
Karnataka BJP state president Vijayendra Yediyurappa addressed the issue on X, stating, “In Chittapur, it is those who exploit the Constitution who are undermining constitutional rights. The denial of permission by the tehsildars to submit 12 pieces of information and documents for the centenary celebrations of the RSS reflects an administrative style reminiscent of North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.”
Yediyurappa warned that if such restrictions were applied across Karnataka, there would be virtually no scope for cultural or patriotic programmes. He framed the dispute as a battle “between authoritarian administration vs. democracy” and pledged that the BJP would fight to uphold constitutional and democratic values.
Why did Chittapur administration refuse RSS permission?
The Chittapur administration, however, justified its decision by highlighting potential threats to public order. The official order noted that two other groups, Bhim Army and Dalit Panthers, had also planned processions through the city on the same day, raising fears of clashes and disturbances. As a result, all three groups were denied permission to hold marches.
Officials emphasised that the move was based solely on maintaining law and order, and not on political bias. Police authorities remain on alert to ensure public safety during the period, particularly as the centenary celebrations of the RSS coincide with heightened political activity in the district.
