DFB to open talks with Jürgen Klopp for men’s head coach role after Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation. Klopp has shown willingness to take on the job.

The German Football Association (DFB) is set to officially open talks with Jürgen Klopp, who has shown a ‘general willingness’ to take on the role of the men’s head coach after Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation following the team’s shock Round of 32 exit in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nagelsmann, who had a contract until 2028, stepped down from the job on Friday, four days after Paraguay stunned the four-time World Champions in the penalty shoot-out. According to German media, he was paid a €7m (INR 76.28 crore) severance fee to cut his contract short.
“Alongside head coach Julian Nagelsmann, his two assistants, Benjamin Glück and Benjamin Hübner, will also leave their roles,” the association said in a statement. “The DFB extends its sincere thanks for their commitment. Regarding the appointment of a successor, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jürgen Klopp, who has already indicated his general willingness to take on the role,” it added.
Klopp is one of the most decorated coaches in world football. His managerial career began at FSV Mainz 05 in 2001, where he transitioned directly from playing to coaching. He successfully guided the club to its first promotion to the Bundesliga.
In 2008, he assumed the managerial role at Borussia Dortmund. During his seven-year tenure, he revitalized the team, securing consecutive Bundesliga titles and reaching the UEFA Champions League final.
In October 2015, Klopp was appointed manager of Liverpool FC. He re-established the club as a dominant force in global football, implementing a highly energetic tactical approach. Under his leadership, Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and secured their first domestic league title in thirty years in 2020.
Since January 2025, when Klopp shifted away from traditional club management to become the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull, he has categorically denied various links in club football. This is the first time he has been officially open to a managerial return.
