A Delhi court ordered the release of 14 JNU students arrested after a protest march. Student groups plan a fresh protest today.
JNU protest march: 14 student protesters released.
Fourteen students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who were arrested during a protest march last week have been released after a Delhi court ordered their immediate release. Student leaders on Monday (March 2, 2026) termed the development a relief for the university community.
Those released include JNUSU president Aditi Mishra, vice president Gopika K Babu, joint secretary Danish Ali, former JNUSU president Nitish Kumar, and AISA All India president Neha, among others.
The court had granted bail to the protesters on February 27, noting that while assaulting police personnel is a serious offence, the accused are students with their careers ahead of them.
The arrests followed an attempted march by members of the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) on February 26. Students had gathered at the Sabarmati T-Point on campus and planned to move towards the education ministry as part of their protest against JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit’s recent podcast remarks, the rustication of student union office-bearers and the proposed Rohith Vemula Act.
Police stopped the protesters at heavily barricaded university gates, which led to a scuffle. Delhi Police alleged that some students physically assaulted personnel and injured several officers, after which an FIR was registered. A total of 51 protesters were detained.
Student groups, however, called the police action heavy-handed and said the continued detention had caused anxiety among families and classmates. Many of those detained are from different states and stay in university hostels.

Meanwhile, a protest call has been given in solidarity with the accused of the violence outside the JNU campus. Opposition MPs including Manoj Jha and women activist Brinda Karat from the JNUTA are expected to be present at Sabarmati Hostel at 4 pm on Monday.
In a statement, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) said the students’ release was a “victory for the students’ movement.” The group added that protests would continue until their demands, including equity safeguards in higher education and a rollback of what they described as diluted courses under the National Education Policy, are met.
