Delhi Police registered an FIR on Wednesday night in connection with the controversial slogan raised against PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah outside Sabarmati Hostel in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The complaint was lodged by the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of JNU.

The report said that 30-35 students were present at the spot. Initially the event was peaceful, but provocative slogans were raised when Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam were not granted bail. The two are accused in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case. CSO has also identified some students.

Actually, on January 6, a 35-second video went viral. It was claimed that JNU students had raised slogans on the night of January 5, ‘Modi-Shah’s grave will be dug on JNU soil’. JNU management had also demanded an FIR in the matter.

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari had claimed that this demonstration in JNU took place in support of Omar Khalid-Sharjeel. This is not a protest, but the spread of anti-national ideology. Whereas Congress had called it a way of expressing anger.

Delhi riots case: Four accused released from jail after bail from Supreme Court

Four accused Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa-ur-Rehman were released from Delhi’s Tihar Jail on Wednesday night after getting bail from the Supreme Court on January 5 in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case. Meanwhile, Mohammad Salim Khan was released from Mandoli jail.

The fifth accused Shadab Ahmed has also been granted bail by the Supreme Court, but did not appear in the court to file his surety bond. At the same time, the court had denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.

Another accused Salim Malik alias Munna has filed a fresh bail plea citing similar allegations. Relief has been sought on the same grounds as Mohammad Salim Khan.

During the release of Gulfisha Fatima, the family members welcomed her with flowers, garlands and sweets.

JNU management said- will not allow the university to become a laboratory of hatred

On this matter, JNU management has said that we will take strict action on this matter. Will not allow the university to become a laboratory for spreading hatred. The university said that an FIR has already been registered in the matter. Violence, illegal conduct or activities that undermine national unity will not be tolerated. The accused students will be suspended.

JNU Students Union President Aditi Mishra has said that every year students protest to condemn the violence that took place on the campus on January 5, 2020. All slogans raised in the protest were ideological and did not attack anyone personally. They were not directed at anyone.

JNU administration said – this is a violation of the code of conduct

Such slogans are against democratic protest and violate JNU’s code of conduct. This may harm public order, peace and security of the campus. The slogans were clearly audible, deliberately raised and repeated, making it clear that this was a deliberate wrongdoing. This is a deliberate disregard for discipline, rules and the peaceful atmosphere of the university campus.

Congress said – this is a way to express anger, BJP said – Sapoles should keep whining.

• Congress leader Udit Raj- This is a way of expressing anger. There is anger in JNU against the Supreme Court’s decision in the larger conspiracy case of 2020 Delhi riots. This is being done to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam because they are Muslims. Injustice has been done to them. SC’s decision is very unfortunate.
• Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa- Whoever creates unrest will go to jail. This is the rule of BJP; Those who create unrest here will not be tolerated at all. The rioters belong in jail.
• Union Minister Giriraj Singh- JNU has become the office of ‘Tukde-Tukde Gang’. I want to say to the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ that those who support people like Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, who expressed pro-Pakistan sentiments and talked about separating the Chicken Neck Corridor, are traitors.
• CPI(M) leader Hannan Mollah- Such slogans have been raised 100 times in the country in the last 50 years. However, such slogans should not be raised. They should be very careful while raising slogans.
• Kapil Mishra, Minister in Delhi Government- There are some people who raise such anti-national, anti-religious slogans. They also raise slogans for Afzal Guru, against the decision of the Supreme Court, in support of terrorists and Naxalites, but their slogans are limited to just slogans. This is just their frustration.

What happened on 5 January 2020…

Violence broke out on JNU campus on 5 January 2020. Some masked people entered the campus and targeted students in three hostels. They were attacked with sticks, stones and iron rods. Residents were hit and broke windows, furniture and personal belongings.

Chaos prevailed on the campus for nearly two hours, in which at least 28 people, including JNU Students Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured.

Delhi Police was also accused of bias in not taking action against those who committed violence on campus and naming student union leaders including Ghosh in the FIR.

Supreme Court did not grant bail to Delhi riots accused Umar-Sharjeel.

Actually, Sharjeel Imam is in custody since 28 January 2020 and Umar since 13 September 2020 in the case of Delhi riots in 2020. On January 5, 2025, the Supreme Court rejected the bail pleas of Umar and Sharjeel. Bail petition cannot be filed in this case for one year.

He had challenged the order of the Delhi High Court, in which he was denied bail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in a case related to the 2020 Delhi riots.
