Starlink lagged behind among the three companies in submitting the security compliance documents required to provide satellite internet service in India. Airtel-backed ‘OneWeb’ was the first to submit the documents, after which ‘Jio Satcom’ completed its process.
All three companies have received satellite broadband licenses, but regulatory and security approvals are still pending before commercial rollout. This information has come to light in a report by NDTV.
Government report came after Musk’s allegations
This information has come to light at a time when about a month ago Elon Musk had alleged that “some big industrialists” of India were trying to stop the entry of Starlink. After Musk’s statements, controversy broke out regarding India’s satcom market and competition.

The process is completely transparent, no favoritism
The government had rejected Musk’s claims and allegations of bias. Officials clarified that the licensing and approval process for satellite internet services has been kept completely transparent. The Government of India welcomes every company that wants to invest and provide services in this sector.
‘Customer is king, users will decide who will win’
It has been said in the report that the customer is the most important person in the market. Ultimately, consumers will decide which satcom provider they want to use based on price, service quality and value.
2 major decisions left before service starts
Even though Jio, OneWeb and Starlink all three have the necessary licenses, there are two major obstacles before providing satellite internet to common customers in the country:
- Security Clearance: All three companies will have to fully comply with the mandatory safety conditions of the government and demonstrate their technical capability.
- Spectrum allocation and pricing: The government has not yet decided under what framework the radio spectrum will be given to the companies and what will be their prices.
Starlink bid- India’s user data will remain in India only
On October 7, at the India Mobile Congress, Starlink Business Operations Vice President Lauren Dryer had said that the company has prepared its infrastructure according to the security rules of India. He had assured that the data of Indian users will be kept safe within the borders of the country.
Important things related to Starlink in 3 questions and answers…
Question 1: What is Starlink and why is it special?
answer: Starlink is a project of SpaceX, which provides high-speed internet through satellites. Its satellites rotate close to the earth, due to which the internet runs fast and smooth. This is especially beneficial for those areas, like villages or mountains, where general internet is not available.

Question 2: Why is it taking so much time for Starlink to get the license?
answer: Starlink has been trying since 2022, but was delayed due to security concerns. The Government of India has set conditions like data security and call interception. Starlink agrees to these terms. Now services can start soon.
Question 3: What will be the benefit to the common people?
answer: Starlink will provide internet access to villages and remote areas, which will promote online education, telemedicine, and business. Also, with increasing competition in the telecom market, cheaper and better plans can be available.
