Jay-Z is moving from producing the Super Bowl halftime show to taking center stage as its headlining performer. The NFL announced on Monday night that the rapper will lead the halftime show on February 14 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The announcement follows several days of speculation and comes shortly after Jay-Z wrapped his “Jay-Z 30″ concert series at the same stadium over the weekend. The shows began with three performances at Yankee Stadium in New York, moved to London and concluded in Southern California.
Through Roc Nation, Jay-Z has worked with the NFL since 2019, advising on and helping produce the league’s entertainment presentations, including the Super Bowl halftime show. When the partnership was announced, Jay-Z made clear that performing himself was not part of the plan. He recalled telling NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, “If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, then we can just end this conversation now.”
Seven years later, he is preparing to take the halftime stage himself.
Born Shawn Carter, Jay-Z has earned 25 Grammy Awards from 89 nominations, the second-highest total in history behind his wife, Beyoncé, who has performed at two Super Bowls. His influential catalog features albums including “Reasonable Doubt,” “The Blueprint” and “The Black Album,” along with hit tracks such as “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem),” “99 Problems” and “Empire State of Mind,” his collaboration with Alicia Keys.
Released in 1996, his debut album, “Reasonable Doubt,” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year.
Beyond recording music, Jay-Z has built an extensive business portfolio spanning music publishing, artist management and sports. He co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records and launched Roc Nation in 2008, growing the company into an entertainment business representing artists and athletes.
His achievements have also earned recognition from major music institutions. In 2017, Jay-Z became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
Last season’s Super Bowl halftime show featured Bad Bunny, whose songs recorded sharp increases across streaming charts, playlists and music discovery platforms in the hours after the February performance.
