The BJP on Sunday strongly criticised Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani for his remarks alleging discrimination against Muslims in India, terming his statements “confusing” and “misleading” at a time when the Delhi blast probe is underway.

BJP leader Yaser Jilani said Madani’s comments ignored the inclusive efforts of the Central government and instead sought to create “unnecessary confusion” among the community.

“There cannot be a better place for Muslims than India, nor a better big brother than the Hindus,” Jilani said, responding to Madani’s claim that the government was ensuring Muslims “never raise their heads.”

Pointing to contradictions in Madani’s speech, Jilani said, “On one hand, he says the condition of Muslims in the world is not good, and on the other, he talks about Zohran Mamdani becoming Mayor-elect of New York. He also mentioned London Mayor Sadiq Khan and referred to Azam Khan and Al-Falah University.”

Jilani further asserted that the cases involving Azam Khan and the owner of Al-Falah University were rooted in legal violations.

“The owner of Al-Falah University is a perpetrator, and Azam Khan is also involved in various offences. The Central government is taking everyone along. He should not create confusion among the people of the nation,” he said.

Madani had earlier claimed that Muslims were being targeted in India and cited examples of leaders abroad rising to top positions, adding that those who attain such roles in India end up in jail.

“The world thinks that Muslims have become helpless, finished, and barren. I don’t believe so. Today, a Muslim Mamdani can become mayor of New York, a Khan can become mayor of London, whereas in India, no one can even become a university vice-chancellor. And even if someone does, they will be sent to jail, like Azam Khan. Look at what is happening today in Al-Falah. The government is working relentlessly to ensure that Muslims never raise their heads,” he had said.

His remarks have triggered political reactions, with the BJP accusing him of attempting to stoke fear and division.

BJP leader Mohsin Raza alleged that Madani and his family have looted the country’s Muslims and played blame-game politics. “This has been their dual character for a very long time. They kept receiving grants in the name of Muslim minorities for years but did nothing for them.”

Meanwhile, the Congress backed Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani’s sharp remarks on the condition of Muslims in India, with party leader Udit Raj endorsing his concerns and accusing the government of discrimination.

“I support his statement. I agree that someone has done terrorist activity in the Al-Falah University, but the university should not be targeted. Why are homes of Muslims being bulldozed? America is great, as there is no discrimination there,” he said.
