Jaishankar Meets Qatar PM, Discusses Strategic Ties And West Asia

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Qatar PM Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani to review bilateral ties and discuss the evolving security situation in West Asia.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, on Sunday to review the full spectrum of India-Qatar ties, with discussions focusing on energy, trade, investments, connectivity, security and people to people relations.

Jaishankar is currently on a six-day visit to four Gulf nations Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman from July 5 to 10. The visit comes at a time of rapidly evolving political developments in West Asia following the agreement aimed at ending the recent US-Iran conflict.

Sharing details of the meeting on X, Jaishankar said he thanked Prime Minister Al-Thani for ensuring the safety and well-being of the Indian community living in Qatar.

“Reviewed various facets of our bilateral cooperation, especially energy, trade, investments, connectivity, security and people to people ties. Explored new opportunities for deepening our Strategic Partnership,” Jaishankar wrote.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the situation in West Asia, discussing the recent conflict and its wider regional implications.

During his visit, Jaishankar is scheduled to hold talks with the foreign ministers and senior leadership of Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and discuss regional developments and issues of mutual interest.

Qatar and Oman have recently played key diplomatic roles, alongside Pakistan, in efforts to facilitate the Iran ceasefire after weeks of heightened tensions in the region. Indirect talks between the United States and Iran, hosted in Doha, are expected to resume after the week long funeral rites of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which began on Friday.

Following the Gulf tour, Jaishankar will travel to New York on July 13 to launch India’s campaign for a non permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028-29 term. He will then visit Brussels on July 14-15 to attend the third India EU Trade and Technology Council meeting and hold discussions with European Union and Belgian leaders.
