US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday officially renaming the Department of Defense as the Department of War. The signing ceremony took place at the White House in the presence of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

This marks the 200th executive order signed by President Trump since taking office in January this year.

With the renaming of the department, Hegseth will now be the Secretary of War. He has already updated his bio on social media handles to reflect the change.  Prior to the signing, Hegseth addressed the room, declaring, “This War Department, Mr. President, just like America, is BACK… We’re going to set the tone for this country.”

The name change revives the department’s historic title, last used officially in the 1940s, and aligns with the Trump administration’s broader “warrior ethos” campaign. The move underscores a symbolic shift in how the administration wants to present US military posture to both domestic and global audiences.

In his statement after signing the order, Trump spoke about the significance of the new name. “We won the first World War. We won the second World War. We won everything before that and in between — and then we decided to go woke and we changed the name to Department of Defense. So, we’re going Department of War.”

The US President once again mentioned about securing seven peace deals, claiming that he was able to achieve it because the US is a strong nation. He also stated that the name change would provide a clear message to the world about American military strength. “I think it sends a message of victory… really a message of strength — we’re very strong. We’re much stronger than anyone would really understand,” Trump stated.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan “Razin” Caine was also present at the occasion. He appreciated the US President and Defense Secretary for providing a “clear and unambiguous” mission to America’s military.
