The Karnataka government wants to increase the overtime limit to 144 hours in 3 months.

The Government of Karnataka is planning to increase the daily working hours of IT sector employees from 9 to 10 hours. According to the report of Deccan Herald, this limit can go up to 12 hours by combining overtime.

According to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishment Act, 1961, no more than 9 hours of work can be done daily. Apart from this, overtime is not allowed for more than 50 hours in 3 months.

In the new proposal, the government wants to increase the overtime limit to 144 hours in 3 months.

Employees called it modern slavery

Opposition to this proposal of the government has started in Karnataka. The Karnataka IT Union has described the proposal as Modern Day Slavery. Unions say that working for more hours will affect the health of the employees. Apart from this, the union says that companies can implement a two-shift system, which will put the job of one-third of the employees in danger.

Starting from Andhra Pradesh

Prior to Karnataka, the Andhra Pradesh government has also given companies for 10 hours of daily working. Here women have also been allowed to work in night shifts, provided security, transport and lighting are provided. The Andhra government argues that this will increase investment and strengthen women financially, but there has also been opposed by trade unions there.
