Indian Railways is rolling out a redesigned Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website and mobile app from Wednesday, aiming to make train ticket booking faster, more convenient and more secure for passengers. The upgraded platform features a modern interface designed to simplify the booking process while improving transparency. Alongside the launch, Indian Railways has also introduced new rules for passengers booking unreserved (general) tickets online.
One of the biggest changes is the ability to save personal details within a user’s profile. Once the information has been stored, passengers will no longer need to enter the same details every time they book a ticket, helping reduce booking time. The revamped platform also removes repeated pop-ups and unnecessary screens to create a smoother user experience.
Seat Availability Across All Classes On One Screen: Passengers will now be able to view seat availability across all travel classes on a single screen, eliminating the need to switch between multiple pages to compare options. The checkout process has also been streamlined, with fewer steps required to complete a booking.
Improved Security And Simpler Checkout: According to railway officials, complex verification processes such as repeated CAPTCHA prompts have been reduced. At the same time, new technology has been introduced to curb fraudulent ticket bookings, making the system more secure for genuine passengers, including those booking Tatkal tickets.
New Rules For Online General Tickets: Indian Railways has also revised the rules for unreserved (general) tickets booked through the RailOne app. Passengers travelling on online general tickets must now carry an original photo identity card during their journey. The new requirement does not apply to general tickets purchased at railway reservation counters. In addition, every online general ticket will be linked to the mobile number used at the time of booking.
Screenshots And Shared Tickets Will No Longer Be Accepted: Under the revised rules, passengers must present the original digital ticket on the same mobile phone used to make the booking during ticket inspection. Railways has clarified that tickets shared via messaging platforms such as WhatsApp or shown as screenshots on another mobile phone will not be accepted. Passengers who fail to produce the original ticket on the booking device may be treated as travelling without a valid ticket and could face action under railway rules.
R-Wallet Bonus Extended Until 2028: To encourage digital ticketing, Indian Railways has extended the three per cent bonus for passengers booking general tickets using the R-Wallet on the RailOne app until August 24, 2028. The bonus is expected to continue providing savings for passengers who regularly purchase digital tickets.
What Travellers Should Remember? Passengers booking general tickets online should carry their original photo identity card while travelling and ensure the ticket is stored on the same mobile phone used for booking. Tickets shown as screenshots or shared through messaging apps such as WhatsApp will not be accepted during ticket verification.
