IRCTC found it costly to refund Rs 1 less on cancellation of train tickets. Kasargod District Consumer Commission has ordered IRCTC to refund Rs 1 to the passenger, along with Rs 3,100 as damages and litigation costs.
The Commission has also imposed 9% interest on Re 1. Asked to pay compensation of Rs 100 for deficiency in service and unfair trade practices.
Apart from this, ordered to pay the cost of the case Rs 3000. IRCTC will have to make payment within 30 days.

The matter is 2 years old
The complainant had booked an AC three-tier train ticket for Rs 553 on August 11, 2024. The journey on this ticket was to take place on 20 August 2024. The complainant canceled the ticket on 17th August.
This was done more than 48 hours before the scheduled date of travel. IRCTC deducted Rs 180 as cancellation charge. Apart from this, Rs 9 of 5% GST was also deducted.
The Commission recorded that the passenger should have received a refund of Rs 341. However, IRCTC returned only Rs 340. This left a shortfall of Re 1.
The passenger had asked for compensation of Rs 2.05 lakh
The complainant sought compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the confusion. He also demanded Rs 1 lakh for breaking the trust. Additionally, he demanded Rs 5,000 towards litigation expenses and the return of the remaining Rs 1.
IRCTC had presented its position before the Commission. However, the Commission considered it filed after the expiry of the time limit and rejected it.
What did the commission say – 9% interest will have to be paid on 1 rupee
The Commission said that IRCTC did not give any reason for deducting Rs 1 or refunding less. Not refunding the correct amount is lack of service and unfair business practices. Commission Chairman Krishnan K and member Beena KG gave this order. The order said that the complaint is partially accepted.
According to the order, IRCTC will have to pay 9% interest on Re 1 from 17 August 2024 i.e. the date of ticket cancellation till payment is made.
The Commission fixed a compensation of Rs 100 for deficiency in service and unfair trade practices. The cost of the case was kept at Rs 3,000.
message to consumers
Even a reduction of Re 1 in refund can be considered as deficiency in service. Service providing companies should return the full and correct amount to the customers.
