Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Wednesday said that it launched “devastating” missile strikes on a US military base in Jordan, in the latest escalation between Tehran and Washington.
Iranian state media said ballistic missiles were fired at the Al-Azraq base in Jordan in what the IRGC described as a “punitive operation” following US strikes on Iranian vessels.
The claims have not been independently verified, and there was no immediate confirmation from the US or Jordan of damage or casualties.
IRGC claims ‘heavy damage’
In a statement carried by semi-official Tasnim news agency, the IRGC said a “significant number” of solid- and liquid-fuel ballistic missiles hit areas used for the maintenance, preparation and deployment of US F-35, F-16 and F-15 fighter jets, as well as aircraft shelters.
The group claimed the strikes caused “heavy damage” to US forces.
“In this operation, to punish the aggressor with a heavy attack of solid and liquid fuel ballistic missiles, the hangar for maintenance, preparation and deployment of F-35, F-16, F-15 fighter jets, and the fighter shelter were hit, causing heavy damage to the enemy”, the statement said.
Iranian media also reported that several missiles were fired towards the base, while footage from Jordan showed projectiles in the sky.
Some Iranian outlets claimed cluster munitions were used and identified Muwaffaq al-Salti Air Base in Jordan’s Zarqa governorate as the target. Those claims have not been independently confirmed.
Strike follows tanker attacks
The latest Iranian attack came hours after the US military said it had destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers following recent missile attacks by the IRGC on a US Navy warship.
US Central Command said the warship evaded both attacks and that no American personnel were injured. It said US forces struck the tankers in response to Iran’s “most recent failed attacks”.
Iranian state media, however, said two tankers had been struck in the latest US operation — one near Jask and another near Kharg Island.
Following the tanker strikes, Iran warned oil tankers near ports in Kuwait and Bahrain to leave their vessels, saying they would otherwise be targeted.
The IRGC said the warning applied to ships that were either anchored or docked at the ports.
