International Students’ Day is observed every year on November 17 to honour the courage and sacrifice of thousands of student activists in Prague who stood up for their right to education during the Nazi occupation. The tragic events of November 17, 1939, when Nazi forces invaded the Czech Republic, led to the execution of nine student leaders without trial and the arrest of more than 1,200 students, who were subsequently sent to concentration camps; only a handful survived.

To pay tribute to the loss of these young lives from the University of Prague, the first official observance of International Students’ Day was held in 1941 by the International Students’ Council in London. It was during this meeting that students from various nations unanimously declared November 17 as a global day dedicated to student rights, unity and resistance against oppression.

International Students’ Day 2025: History

After Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in 1933, the Third Reich began aggressively expanding its territory beyond Germany’s borders. In 1938, the Nazis annexed Austria and forced Czechoslovakia to surrender major portions of its land. Germany then occupied the Czech regions, while Slovakia was turned into a puppet state.

In 1939, students from the Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague organised a meeting to celebrate the anniversary of Czechoslovakia’s independence.

However, the gathering was violently disrupted by Nazi forces, resulting in the deaths of labourer Václav Sedláček and student Jan Opletal. Their deaths sparked widespread protests and anti-Nazi demonstrations led by students.

The Nazi response was swift and brutal: all Czech universities were shut down, more than 1,200 students were arrested and many were transported to Sachsenhausen and other concentration camps. On November 17, the Nazis also executed nine professors and students without trial.

Throughout 1941, student leaders such as Lena Chivers, Zink, Paleček and Kavan worked tirelessly to gain international recognition for this day of resistance. Their efforts culminated in representatives from fourteen countries signing a declaration to officially mark November 17 as International Students’ Day.

Why International Students’ Day Is Significant

Even today, millions around the world continue to struggle for access to quality education, freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest.

International Students’ Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting student rights and ensuring that young people have a voice in shaping their future.

Educational institutions and student groups commemorate the day by organising events, discussions and cultural activities that promote multiculturalism, equality and the universal right to education. Many students also use social media to raise awareness, share stories of student activism and highlight the role of youth in driving social change.
