French labor authorities have imposed a fine of 1.75 lakh euros i.e. about Rs 2 crore on Infosys. The company’s system for recording employees’ working hours was found not to meet legal requirements. This fine has been imposed by France’s regional labor authority DRIEETS Île-de-France. Infosys has given information about this matter in its stock exchange filing. Concerns over working hours The investigation revealed that the company’s working-time recording system did not fully comply with French labor regulations. The authority has raised concerns over the reliability of the system, its ability to maintain auditable records and monitoring capabilities for certain categories of employees. Under French labor law, employers are required to keep accurate records of employees’ working hours. This includes adherence to the country’s 35-hour work week, limits on overtime, and mandatory rest periods. According to the report, records should be reliable and auditable when needed. It is not clear from the stock exchange filing which Infosys employees these findings relate to. Also, it does not say whether the company has been instructed to make changes in the time-recording system. Reactions on social media: After this news, people have given many reactions on social media. One Instagram user wrote that full-time permanent work in France is usually 35 hours and contracts can go up to a maximum of 48 hours. It is illegal there to contact employees after office hours, on weekends and holidays. Another user commented that now French employees will do their normal work and the workload will shift to India, as corporate slavery is common here. A third user said it’s no wonder many young people prefer foreign work culture. Many employers in India ignore work-life balance, while the government has failed to enact strong laws against the six-day work week or mandate strict overtime pay for hours exceeding 40. Narayana Murthy’s 9-9-6 work culture controversy This fine has been imposed amid the ongoing debate in the company regarding working hours. Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy has previously advocated longer working hours for Indian employees. He argues that the country needs to do more to remain competitive at the global level. Referring to China’s 9-9-6 work culture, Murthy had said that no individual, community or country has progressed without hard work. He described this schedule as working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week.
