India on Wednesday welcomed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in New Delhi to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 14 and 15.

“A very warm welcome to Foreign Minister of Iran, Syed Abbas Araghchi, on his arrival in New Delhi for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting,” said Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X.

This is Araghchi’s second visit to India this year, and this visit is significant as it is the first since the beginning of the ongoing war between the United States and Iran in West Asia, which has roiled the global economy and increased oil prices.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will host Araghchi on Friday for bilateral talks, hoping to address some of India’s concerns related to energy and connectivity. While the ministers have spoken on multiple occasions since the conflict began, this is their first in-person meeting since February 28.

Araghchi will attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting hosted by India, which will focus on regional stability, multilateral cooperation, and economic resilience. The meeting serves as a prelude to the 18th BRICS Summit, which is scheduled to be held in New Delhi under India’s presidency in September this year.

Araghchi has been seeking a more proactive role by the BRICS, especially India as the current Chair, in addressing issues related to the conflict. Sources earlier said Iran wants BRICS, under India’s current presidency, to play a “constructive role” amid the worsening situation in the region. The issue was also raised earlier during Araghchi’s conversation with Jaishankar in March.

According to a statement issued by the Iranian government at the time, Araghchi had stressed that platforms such as BRICS have an important role to play under the current circumstances and should contribute constructively towards maintaining regional and global stability and security.
