The Indian Under-17 women’s team thrashed Malaysia 4-0 to secure a second consecutive qualification for the Women’s Asia Cup in China in 2027. The Tigresses needed only a draw for qualification, but Redima Chingkhamayum (28′), Pritika Barman (50′), Anushka Kumari (56′) and Nidhi (86′) scored the goals to blow away the Malaysians and top Group E in the qualification round.
It marks the end of a sensational run for India, with three wins, 20 goals scored and none conceded. 15-year-old Anushka Kumari scored eight of those in a memorable campaign. India will join defending champion DPR Korea, Japan, Australia and host China, who qualified directly after finishing in the top four at the 2026 tournament, and seven other group-toppers from the qualification round.
This qualifying win makes Joakim Alexandersson’s side the first Indian team to reach back-to-back Women’s Asian Cups in any age category, including the senior level. In the previous edition, India reached the quarterfinals, their first-ever campaign to reach the knockout round.
India began the qualifiers with a record 14-0 thrashing of Iraq, the biggest-ever win by an Indian U17 women’s team, before defeating Syria 2-0 on Thursday. Malaysia were not pushovers either, having made a strong start by beating Syria 1-0 before registering a 4-0 victory over Iraq.
“Even if people outside think we are the favourites, we must always stay humble, whoever we are facing. In every sport, you have to be humble and respect the opponent,” Alexandersson had said before the match.
“Of course, self-confidence is important. You need to believe in what you are doing, but you also have to do the hard work in the games. As long as we stick to our principles and try to work harder than the opponent, I feel we have a good advantage,” he added.
