The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully completed the final development trials of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Launched Precision Guided Missile (ULPGM)-V3, marking a significant step in India’s push for indigenous defence capabilities.
The trials were conducted in both Air-to-Ground and Air-to-Air modes at the DRDO test range near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, officials said. The missile system was operated using an integrated Ground Control System (GCS) designed to automate launch procedures and improve operational readiness.
According to DRDO, the ULPGM-V3 has been developed for engaging a range of targets, including tanks, drones, helicopters and other airborne threats, enhancing the versatility of India’s unmanned combat systems.
For production and development, DRDO has partnered with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Adani Defence Systems & Technologies Limited, both based in Hyderabad. The missile system was integrated with UAVs developed by Newspace Research and Technologies, Bengaluru, for the current round of trials.
The missile was led by Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, with contributions from several DRDO laboratories, including the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL).
Officials said the ULPGM-V3 has been produced entirely through India’s domestic defence ecosystem, involving multiple MSMEs and industry partners, and the successful trials demonstrated a mature indigenous supply chain capable of supporting large-scale production.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, public sector units and industry partners for the successful tests, describing the achievement as a “strategic milestone” toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.
He highlighted the missile’s capability in anti-tank operations as well as air-to-air engagements against drones and helicopters, calling the development a boost to India’s self-reliance in advanced defence technology.
