Student suicides in India hit a record 13,892 in 2023, rising faster than overall suicides, with Maharashtra reporting the highest cases, NCRB data shows.

The number of student suicides in India touched a record level in 2023, with 13,892 deaths reported. This marks a 6.5% increase from 2022, according to the latest figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
Overall suicides in India also rose sharply. In 2023, the country recorded 171,418 suicides — a jump of 23.2% compared to 2019 and 27.2% higher than 2013. But suicides among students have risen even faster, increasing by 34.4% since 2019 and almost 65% since 2013. Between 2013 and 2023, India lost 117,849 students to suicide.
According to NCRB data, students accounted for 8.1% of all suicides in 2023. Of those, 7,330 were male, 6,559 female, and three transgender. Maharashtra reported the most student suicides (14.7%), followed by Madhya Pradesh (10.5%), Uttar Pradesh (9.9%), and Tamil Nadu (9.6%).
The report also highlighted the education levels of suicide victims. Nearly one-fourth had studied up to Class 10, while 18.6% had studied till Class 8, and 17.5% till Class 12. Only 5.5% were graduates or higher.

The government has launched initiatives like the Manodarpan programme, which offers a toll-free helpline (8448440632) and counselling sessions, and the Tele MANAS helpline (14416, 1800-891-4416), which has handled over 2.3 million calls in 20 languages.
In March this year, the Supreme Court set up a national task force to address students’ mental health, evaluate schools’ and colleges’ resources, improve support services, and recommend strategies to prevent student suicides. The task force has not yet submitted its interim report to the court.
