The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement condemning a military attack on a Thai commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the targeting of civilian shipping in the ongoing West Asia conflict is escalating to dangerous new levels.

The vessel, Mayuree Naree, was struck while transiting one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints en route to Kandla, a major port on India’s western coast in Gujarat.

“India deplores the fact that commercial shipping is being made a target of military attacks in the ongoing conflict in West Asia,” the MEA said, adding that “the intensity and lethality of the attacks only seems to be increasing.”

The ministry noted that Indian citizens have already been among those killed in previous maritime attacks during the conflict.

India called on all parties to refrain from targeting commercial vessels and endangering civilian crew members, reiterating its position in favour of freedom of navigation and unimpeded maritime commerce.

The Omani navy launched a rescue operation shortly after the attack. Twenty crew members have been rescued, while search efforts are continuing for three missing sailors, officials said. The rescued crew members were pulled from the water after abandoning the vessel. The fire onboard was later brought under control, though the extent of the damage remains unclear.

“The specific details and cause of the attack are currently under investigation,” the Thai navy said.
