Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sent Christmas greetings to Christians across Bangladesh and Bangladeshi Christians abroad on Tuesday. However, in her message she raised the threat of persecution that minorities in Bangladesh face.
“December 25 marks Christmas, the most significant religious festival for the Christian community. On this joyous occasion, I extend my heartfelt greetings to the Christian community and the people of Bangladesh,” Hasina said.
She then highlighted that Bangladesh currently has been witnessing minorities facing threats of persecution.
“However, in today’s Bangladesh, we witness growing divisions, the spread of hatred, and the persecution of minority communities. Communal harmony is at risk, and it is imperative that we safeguard our nation from these divisive forces by building a humane society,” she further added in her social media post on X.
“Christmas arrives every year with messages of brotherhood, love, compassion, and generosity. It reminds us of Jesus Christ’s sacrifices and his vision of a better world. May this holy day inspire us all to embrace these values,” Hasina said in her message.
Bangladesh, which has transitioned from decades of Hasina and her party Awami League’s rule, is going through a restive period as the interim government struggles to contain the threat hardline Islamists pose to the minorities and the larger civil society.
Hindu Bengalis, adivasis, hill tribes, Christians, atheists and secular-minded people have been attacked following the toppling of the Hasina regime, with Hindu Bengalis facing the wrath of the Islamists as they accuse the community of backing Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League.
The nation has witnessed protests by the Hindu community over attacks on places of worship, arrests of religious leaders and threats to members of the community.
Members of the Hindu Bengali community as well as adivasis and hill tribes have complained about the persistent threat from Islamists following the regime change earlier this year.
