‘I’m A Bit Nervous’: Kyrgios Confesses Jitters Ahead Of ‘Battle Of The Sexes’ vs Sabalenka

Nick Kyrgios has built a career on bravado. Ahead of Sunday’s “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition against Aryna Sabalenka, though, he’s admitting something rare: nerves.

“I’d be lying if I said I’m not a bit nervous,” Kyrgios said before the much-debated showdown in Dubai. “The whole world will be watching.”

That sense of uncertainty is exactly what Sabalenka is relishing. The world number one called the match “unpredictable” — and said that’s what makes it exciting.

“I don’t know what to expect, and I love that,” Sabalenka said. “Playing Nick is a huge challenge. He’s unpredictable and a bit crazy.”

While critics argue the exhibition risks trivialising women’s tennis, neither player appears interested in the noise. Sabalenka believes the moment is about visibility and confidence.

“I hope girls watching see how strong and tough I am to have the guts to challenge myself,” she said. “Women have already proved we deserve equality.”

Kyrgios, for all his showmanship, struck a more reflective tone. He acknowledged Sabalenka’s pedigree — a multiple Grand Slam champion — and admitted the scale of the occasion.

“We’ve both played in big stadiums,” he said. “I’ve played incredible matches. She’s a Grand Slam champion. I can’t wait to step on the court.”

Then came the Kyrgios flourish.

“Aryna has tried to distract me with the nightlife here,” he added, laughing. “But I’m staying focused.”

The match will be played under modified rules — one serve per player, a smaller court for Sabalenka and a 10-point tiebreak if required — ensuring spectacle, unpredictability and plenty of debate.
