PIL filed in Allahabad High Court seeks Uttar Pradesh wide ban on Hindi film Dhurandhar The Revenge, alleging it falsely shows Atiq Ahmad murder as a R and AW operation

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) plea has been filed before the Allahabad High Court seeking a state-wide ban on the Hindi feature film ‘Dhurandhar The Revenge’.
According to the plea, it alleges that the film ‘illegally’ portrays the murder of former Samajwadi Party MP Atiq Ahmad as a sovereign act orchestrated by R&AW.
Earlier, the Madras High Court refused to ban the Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar: The Revenge in Tamil Nadu during the 2026 assembly elections, dismissing pleas alleging it favored the ruling party.
The petition was filed citing concerns related to the model code of conduct in place ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
According to Live Law, an advocate reportedly made an oral submission before Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan, contending that the film carries political themes and should not be screened during the election period. With Tamil Nadu heading to the polls in a month, the timing of the release has become a matter of concern.
However, the film is running in theaters, though it faces bans in several Gulf nations and has been subject to scrutiny in Pakistan regarding its content.
