Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against IIT-Bombay in connection with the death of a second-year student, who died by suicide hours after he was found using a mobile phone during an examination. The development came as protests continued on the Powai campus, with students seeking accountability and transparency from the institute.

Students Allege Disciplinary Action Was Threatened

The student was reportedly caught using a mobile phone during the examination. According to his classmates, he was also accused of looking at another student’s answer sheet and was asked to leave the examination hall.

Students alleged that he was threatened with disciplinary action, including possible suspension. These claims became a major point of contention during protests on campus.

IIT-Bombay Says No Disciplinary Action Was Taken

IIT-Bombay has rejected the claims that disciplinary proceedings were initiated against the student. The institute said he had uploaded the examination question paper on ChatGPT to seek answers.

According to the institute, the matter was discussed with him by the instructor and the Head of Department. He was counselled and assured that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career. IIT-Bombay said no disciplinary action had been initiated against him.

The student later returned to his hostel room, where he was subsequently found dead, according to the institute and police reports. The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated.

Third Student Death At Powai Campus This Year

The incident has triggered widespread concern among students and is reportedly the third student suicide at the IIT-Bombay Powai campus this year. More than 400 students took part in protests, demanding answers from the administration over the handling of the incident.

The FIR marks a further development in the case, while the police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death is underway.
