IISc Bangalore Leads Indian Universities in 2026 THE World Rankings, Oxford Tops List

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has risen to the 201-250 rank band in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, maintaining its position as the top Indian university. Additionally, India has shown significant progress by having the second-highest number of globally ranked universities, second only to the United States. IISc remains the only Indian university in the top 250.

Chennai-based Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences is ranked 351-400, an improvement from its 401-500 band last year. Jamia Millia Islamia (Delhi) and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (Bajhol, Himachal Pradesh) are placed in the 401-500 category, while Banaras Hindu University, Indian Institute of Technology Indore, KIIT University (Bhubaneswar), Lovely Professional University (Phagwara, Punjab), Mahatma Gandhi University (Kottayam, Kerala), and UPES (Dehradun) are ranked 501-600.

In the 601-800 range, over 15 Indian institutes have secured positions, including Aligarh Muslim University, Amity University (Noida), Bharathiar University (Coimbatore), Central University of Punjab (Bhatinda), Chitkara University (Chandigarh), Graphic Era University (Dehradun), IIT Patna, IIIT Hyderabad, Malaviya National Institute of Technology (Jaipur), Manipal Academy of Higher Education, NIT Rourkela, Panjab University (Chandigarh), Sharda University (Greater Noida), Symbiosis International University (Pune), Thapar Institute of Engineering Technology (Patiala), University of Delhi, and VIT University (Vellore).

Oxford University Tops List For 10th Consecutive Year

US and UK universities have taken the top 10 spots in the list. The University of Oxford remains the world’s top university for a record 10th consecutive year.

The second spot has been grabbed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, third rank by Princeton University, fourth by University of Cambridge and fifth by Harvard University.

According to the official notice, Tsinghua University holds its 12th place for the third year in a row, while Peking University has moved up one spot to rank 13th for the second year in a row. The National University of Singapore (NUS) remains in 17th place, unchanged from last year.

The UK-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 include 2,191 institutions from 115 countries and territories. The number of Chinese universities in the top 200 is also steady, at 13 universities for the third year in a row.
