PM Modi and Brazilian President Lula da Silva reviewed the “strong momentum” in the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership during their conversation today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held talks with Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, during which the latter confirmed his state visit to India from February 19 to 21.
“We discussed the State visit I will make to New Delhi between February 19 and 21, as well as the bilateral agenda. We highlighted the importance of the Brazil–India Business Forum that will take place during my visit, which will also be marked by the inauguration of the APEX Office in New Delhi,” Lula said on X.

He said that the two leaders also exchanged views on the global situation and reiterated their commitment to defending peace in Gaza and the world, along with multilateralism and democracy. PM Modi said they reviewed the strong momentum in the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership. He also said that he looked forward to welcoming the Brazilian President to India.

Preparations are underway for President Lula’s visit to India in February 2026, which both sides see as a key milestone in the bilateral relationship. The visit comes as both countries face the steepest tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
Last year, Lula da Silva dialled PM Modi and discussed the “imposition of unilateral tariffs”, signalling concerted efforts at pushing back against Trump’s strong-arm levies that have rattled the global economy.
The two leaders discussed the holding of a Brazilian state visit to India early next year and also recalled the goal of increasing bilateral trade to over $20 billion by 2030, Lula said in an X post. PM Modi, for his part, stressed that the two sides were committed to deepening their partnership.
PM Modi and Lula last met during the G20 Summit in South Africa in November. PM Modi also visited Brazil to attend the BRICS Summit in July. Since 2023, the two leaders have met four times, cementing a working relationship rooted in mutual respect and aligned global goals.
India and Brazil have developed a robust trade relationship, with bilateral trade reportedly surpassing $15 billion, weighted mildly in India’s favour. Key Indian exports include petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, fertilisers, and engineering goods, while Brazil supplies crude oil and agricultural products such as sugar and soybeans. India and Brazil are partners in several key multilateral platforms—G20, BRICS, WTO, and notably, the G4 grouping that includes Japan and Germany.
