Tarun Garg is a mechanical engineer from Delhi Technological University and an MBA from IIM Lucknow.

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has appointed Tarun Garg as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) of the company. Garg will be the first Indian to lead the company since its inception in 1996. He will replace Unsoo Kim.

The company said in a BSE filing on Wednesday (October 15) that Garg will take over his responsibility from January 1, 2026, currently he is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the company. However, this decision is pending the approval of the shareholders, till then he will remain the MD and CEO designate.

Garg has more than 30 years of experience in the auto industry.

Tarun Garg is a mechanical engineer from Delhi Technological University and an MBA from IIM Lucknow. He has more than 30 years of experience in the automobile industry.

Before joining Hyundai, he worked for a long time with Maruti Suzuki India Limited, where he rose from Management Trainee to roles like Regional Sales Manager, Commercial Business Head, National Sales and Network Head and Executive Director (Marketing, Logistics, Parts, and Accessories).

ADAS feature launched in Hyundai cars

While at Hyundai, Garg played a key role in increasing the company’s market reach and profits. He took initiatives in digital marketing, premium channel development, expansion into rural markets and used-car segment. He launched Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in nine Hyundai models and increased profit margins while improving sales quality.

The company said, ‘Garg has a deep understanding of the market and the industry and is an expert in creating practical and visionary strategies based on trends, third-party insights and future projections. Under his (Tarun Garg) leadership, Hyundai struck a balance between volume growth, brand value and customer satisfaction.

The company said that Garg’s appointment is part of its long-term strategy to further strengthen Hyundai’s strong foundation in India and accelerate its transformation towards becoming a smart mobility solutions provider.
