Delhi Protest: A Delhi Police Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) was injured after fresh violence broke out in Connaught Place on Wednesday evening, with police alleging that miscreants attacked security personnel with stones and bottles during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest.
The injured ACP, Vivek Bhagat on Thursday recounted the sequence of events, alleging that police personnel were singled out and attacked by a violent crowd.
While narrating the incident to news agency ANI, ACP Bhagat said that he was on duty in the Jantar Mantar area before heading towards Connaught Place for his evening deployment when the situation escalated near the Tolstoy Marg-Sansad Marg crossing.

“I had a staff of five or six who were walking ahead and with me was an ACP probationer Rohit and my operator Navneet. So as we were walking ahead, we realized that water bottles were being thrown at the staff in front and hooting and anti-social slogans were being raised against the police. So as soon as our police staff moved back and forth a little there, some of them moved forward to save their lives and one of them was overpowered by the crowd,” he said.
He said that blood was coming out of his head and his entire face was covered in blood. He tried to rescue him, but the crowd was so huge and violent that it even overpowered him. He said that police officers were specifically targeted, isolating them and attacking them.
“I tried to intervene to rescue him from there. We even brought him a meter or two forward, but the crowd was so huge and violent. They even overpowered me. The crowd was so violent. Police officers were specifically targeted, isolating them and attacking them…” he added.
What Happened With ACP Bhagat
According to Delhi Police, the incident took place at around 8.30 pm near Tolstoy Marg in Connaught Place, where miscreants allegedly attacked police personnel with stones and bottles, injuring ACP Vivek Bhagat. He was shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital for treatment.
As per the RML Hospital, the ACP suffered multiple bruises on both his upper and lower limbs, injuries to the shoulder, and swelling over the parieto-occipital region, or the back of the head.
The hospital further said that the officer also reported bleeding from the ear and episodes of vomiting following the incident.
ACP Bhagat was evaluated by the treating team in the Department of Surgery, which provided the necessary medical treatment.
Another ACP Suffered Injuries
The incident came hours after another senior officer, ACP Jai Prakash of Punjabi Bagh, sustained a forehead injury during clashes at Jantar Mantar.
Recounting the earlier violence, Jai Prakash said the crowd had swelled to around 5,000-6,000 people by 4.30 pm and that around 500 protesters attempted to move towards restricted areas. He alleged that protesters began pelting stones and hurling water bottles when police intervened.
“I was hit by a stone on my head. I was bleeding when my colleagues removed me from the protest site and rushed me to RML Hospital. There is a minor fracture on my head. Further treatment is underway,” he said as quoted by news agency PTI.
Police sources said multiple clashes erupted during the protest, forcing security personnel to use tear gas to disperse the crowd. According to the sources, at least two ACPs and four other police personnel were injured, and all are in stable condition.
Additional DCP (New Delhi) Anand Mishra alleged that another police officer was chased and assaulted near The Park Hotel on Sansad Marg, while claiming that at least five police personnel were injured after being dragged and beaten during the violence.
Police Initiates Action
Meanwhile, Delhi Police has intensified its investigation into the violence and is using its network of AI-enabled surveillance cameras to identify those allegedly involved in attacking police personnel and damaging public property.
According to police sources, footage from CCTV cameras installed across the New Delhi district is being analysed, while investigators are also examining social media videos and recordings made by police personnel deployed during the protest.
Police said 10 FIRs have so far been registered in connection with the violence.
According to the breakup shared by police, four FIRs have been registered at Parliament Street Police Station, three at Connaught Place Police Station and one each at Mandir Marg, Barakhamba and Kartavya Path police stations.
The cases include allegations of rioting, assault on public servants, obstruction of government duty, damage to public property, criminal conspiracy, offences under the Arms Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, among other charges.

Delhi Police has registered at least five FIRs in connection with the violence during the CJP protest, with more expected. Investigations are underway, including analysis of CCTV footage and social media videos, to determine if the violence was part of a larger conspiracy.
