What would be the grandest way to reward a World Cup winner? In India, we have seen the sport’s governing body splurge hefty cash prizes, rewarding players with sums beyond a common man’s imagination. State associations add further weight to the purse, while state governments often chip in with future-securing rewards such as public-sector jobs.
But what the city of Los Palacios did to felicitate Spanish FIFA World Cup champions Fabian Ruiz and Pablo Páez Gavira ‘Gavi’ was far more organic- quite literally.
Spain reclaimed the title after 16 years, defeating reigning champion Argentina 1-0 on Sunday. Rodri’s boys received a hero’s welcome on their homecoming, but Fabian and Gavi received the eco-friendliest honour.
The Los Palacios City Council gave them a rousing reception, highlighted by one of the province’s most distinctive traditions: presenting the players with tomatoes equal to their body weight.
Several media reports also claimed that the city also announced the renaming of its football venues, with the Marismas and San Sebastián stadiums officially designated as “Fabián Ruiz” and “Pablo Páez Gavira ‘Gavi’.”
These grounds, home to historic local sides AD Mosqueo, La Liara Balompié, and Los Palacios CF, now join the Jesús Navas Sports Complex, which had earlier been named in honour of the former Sevilla FC player.
During Tuesday’s ceremony, the players were also presented with a model of a monument that the City Council confirmed would be installed on Juan José Vaquero Avenue as a permanent homage to Jesús Navas, Fabián Ruiz, and Gavi.
Earlier on Sunday, Spain edged Argentina 1-0 in a tense FIFA World Cup final. A decisive second-half goal by Ferran Torres sealed victory as Spain controlled possession and resisted late pressure. Argentina fought hard but lacked the final touch, handing Spain a historic triumph on football’s biggest global stage.
