Lawrence Bishnoi has become a focal point of national headlines, with associations ranging from a death threat to Bollywood actor Salman Khan to involvement in the murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique. In light of these allegations, News18 embarked on a journey to Dutarawali, Lawrence Bishnoi’s native village, to explore the narrative surrounding him.
The team arrived in Dutarawali, situated in Punjab’s Fazilka district, navigating the rural roads that once shaped Lawrence Bishnoi’s formative years. The first stop was the local playground, a significant landmark where the young Lawrence Bishnoi spent countless hours playing with friends. Next, they visited the village chaupal, a communal space where locals gathered to share stories and news.
The village residents, surprisingly, defended Lawrence Bishnoi, insisting he was not a criminal. Villagers painted a portrait of him that starkly contrasted with his current criminal image. Many recalled him as a good-natured child who excelled in school and actively promoted sports among the youth. “He was a good boy,” a local resident remarked, echoing sentiments shared by many. “Lawrence never engaged in any substance abuse and always encouraged others to stay away from intoxicants.”
Allegations of False Accusations
The villagers were quick to dismiss the allegations against Lawrence Bishnoi, arguing that they were rooted in falsehoods. “How can someone orchestrate a murder from behind bars, under constant police surveillance?” questioned one villager, highlighting the improbability of such claims. They emphasised that Lawrence Bishnoi’s family, known for their agricultural background, owns over 100 acres of land and is well-respected in the community.
Hans Raj, another local, articulated a defence of Lawrence Bishnoi’s character, stating, “He fights for his religion and his nation. His name is recognised globally, yet today, he is labelled a dangerous criminal without justification.” Raj refuted claims that Lawrence Bishnoi’s father had a corrupt past in law enforcement, asserting that no one in his family has ever served in the police.
Calls for Justice and Support
Despite the escalating tension surrounding his case, some villagers alleged that significant sums of money were being offered for Lawrence Bishnoi’s assassination. “Lawrence is innocent,” Raj insisted, urging those offering bounties to reconsider. “He is a good boy. How can any crime be committed while he is in police custody?,” he said.
