How ‘brown sugar’ bust at airport snowballed into mob violence in Manipur

A major drug seizure at Tulihal Airport in Manipur on Tuesday triggered a chain of events that escalated into mob violence in Bishnupur district, leaving several injured and forcing security forces to carry out flag marches to restore order.

The developments come against the backdrop of heightened tension in Bishnupur district, which recently witnessed a deadly bomb explosion that killed two children and left their mother injured, further fuelling unrest and protests in the region.

The incident began when a joint team of CISF and Airport Police apprehended a suspected drug peddler, Md Sabir Ahamed from Kwakta Khuman Thongkhong in Bishnupur district, at around 10:30 am at Imphal airport.

Officials recovered around 6.74 kg of suspected brown sugar, an impure form of heroin, concealed in six containers inside his checked-in baggage. The accused, along with the seized contraband, was handed over to Singjamei Police Station, where a case was registered for further investigation.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused reportedly disclosed information about a hidden cache of arms and ammunition in the Kwakta area. Acting on this input, security forces launched an operation towards the location.

CONVOY BLOCKED, RUMOURS FUEL ESCALATION

At around 1:30 pm, while the team was moving near Thinungei in Bishnupur district, local residents blocked the convoy following the spread of unverified rumours regarding the identity and intent of the security personnel.

A large crowd gathered at the spot, and the situation quickly escalated when sections of the mob turned violent.

Two vehicles belonging to security forces were damaged and set on fire. There were also attempts to detain personnel, further intensifying the confrontation.

FORCE USED TO DISPERSE CROWD

Additional security forces were rushed to the area, and the mob was dispersed using minimum necessary force, including tear gas shells.

Several civilians sustained injuries in the clashes and were provided medical assistance.

Police confirmed that four people have been arrested in connection with the violence, while efforts are underway to identify others involved in arson, unlawful assembly, and obstruction of security forces.

FLAG MARCH AND ONGOING OPERATIONS

To prevent further escalation, security forces conducted a flag march in the affected areas to maintain law and order.

Authorities have urged the public not to circulate rumours or misinformation and to cooperate with security agencies.

Search operations and area domination exercises are continuing in sensitive and fringe zones across the state.
