US President Donald Trump has defended Elon Musk amid fresh controversy over Ukraine’s access to SpaceX’s satellite communications network.

In a post shared by the official POTUS account, Trump praised Musk and dismissed concerns that the billionaire could deliberately do anything wrong.

“He’s a very good person. He’s not going to do anything wrong. He’s a very brilliant person or Starlink wouldn’t exist and other things, but Elon will never do anything wrong. I know him very well. He’s a fair person,” Trump said.

The comments come at a time when Musk’s SpaceX is facing renewed scrutiny over restrictions placed on Ukraine’s use of its military grade Starshield satellite service.

What Is The Starlink Controversy?

Ukraine relies heavily on SpaceX’s satellite network for battlefield communications and drone operations. Reports earlier this month said access to the military version of the system, Starshield, had been restricted, affecting some Ukrainian drone operations.

Reuters reported on October 15 that US officials had said an order to limit Starshield services had come from inside the White House. The report did not identify who had issued the order.

Musk, however, said that any limits on Starshield’s speed or usage were ultimately decided by the US military and the president. SpaceX has also maintained that Starshield is a government controlled service, distinct from the commercially operated Starlink network.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later rejected claims that the White House had ordered the slowdown, saying decisions about Ukraine’s access were in the hands of SpaceX and Musk.

The situation then appeared to change after Trump spoke to Musk. Reuters, citing a Wall Street Journal report, said Trump called Musk and asked him to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s Starlink access. The system was subsequently reported to be operating at higher speeds, although Ukrainian officials said it had not immediately returned to full functionality.

Trump And Musk’s Relationship

Trump and Musk were once close political allies, although their relationship broke down publicly in 2025. The two later moved towards reconciliation, and Trump has continued to publicly praise Musk and his companies.

Trump has repeatedly highlighted Starlink’s role in providing communications during disasters in the US. In October, he also praised Musk and SpaceX, calling the company a “national treasure” while highlighting its work on Starlink and space technology.

Trump’s latest comments are therefore significant because they come as questions continue over who was responsible for the restrictions affecting Ukraine.
