Hardik Pandya did not try to hide Mumbai Indians’ biggest problem after another crushing defeat ended their already disastrous IPL 2026 campaign even further. The MI captain admitted the franchise’s repeated fielding failures throughout the season had badly hurt the team, saying dropped catches constantly left Mumbai “chasing the game.”
Mumbai Indians slumped to another defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 20 at Eden Gardens, a result that summed up much of their miserable season. After managing just four wins in 13 matches, MI now sit second-last on the IPL 2026 points table with only eight points and already eliminated from playoff contention.

Speaking after the defeat, Hardik openly admitted Mumbai’s fielding standards had fallen well below the level required to compete consistently in the IPL.
“I think throughout the season, we’ve been quite poor in fielding. I think we have dropped a lot of catches, which obviously no one wants to do it. But in that part of the game, I think there is no hiding away. I think if you get chances, if you want to win games, you need to grab all the chances, even half chances as well,” Hardik Pandya said.
“But yeah, when you drop chances which can change the game, it’s always you are chasing the game,” added the embattled Pandya
After posting a below-par 147/8, MI still managed to create moments during KKR’s chase where they could have dragged themselves back into the contest. But once again, their fielding let them down badly.
The most frustrating moment came in the 10th over.
Rovman Powell top-edged a pull shot off Hardik Pandya, and what should have been a straightforward catch turned into complete confusion between Deepak Chahar and Robin Minz. Both fielders hesitated, neither committed properly, and the ball eventually dropped safely between them.
It was exactly the kind of moment that has haunted Mumbai throughout IPL 2026.
FIELDING ERRORS SUMMED UP MI’S HORROR SEASON
Mumbai’s catching problems have followed them almost the entire season.
The franchise dropped five catches in a single game against Punjab Kings earlier in the tournament, while multiple matches have slipped away because of missed opportunities in the field.
For a side that once built its dominance on discipline and ruthlessness, the drop in standards has been glaring.
And the contrast against Kolkata Knight Riders during the Eden Gardens clash only made things harsher for MI.
While Mumbai kept spilling chances, KKR once again looked like one of the sharpest fielding sides in the competition.
Much of that improvement has been credited internally to fielding coach Dishant Yagnik, who has transformed Kolkata into arguably the best catching side of IPL 2026. One of the clearest examples came during Cameron Green’s brilliant catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma during the match.
That sharpness eventually became one of the biggest differences between the two teams.
KKR held their chances, absorbed pressure better and eventually chased down the target through a composed finish led by Manish Pandey and Rinku Singh.
Meanwhile, Mumbai’s season now limps towards its conclusion with only one match remaining against Rajasthan Royals.
And after a campaign filled with inconsistency, poor fielding and constant pressure, MI now head into IPL 2027 with far bigger questions than answers.
