Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met on Tuesday on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, marking their first face-to-face interaction in nearly 16 months.
The two leaders were seen shaking hands and exchanging smiles, though there was no trademark PM Modi-Trump hug. They were later seated side by side during the summit proceedings.
Notably, during the G7 leaders’ group photo session earlier, there was no visible eye contact or exchange of greetings between PM Modi and Trump.
The meeting comes at a significant juncture, with ties between New Delhi and Washington having faced turbulence in recent months following Operation Sindoor and the Trump administration’s decision to impose steep tariffs on Indian goods.
The two leaders have spoken several times since PM Modi’s visit to Washington in February 2025. During that trip, India and the US agreed on a framework for an interim bilateral trade deal, negotiations for which are currently underway.
PM Modi and Trump are also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit on Wednesday.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of concerns over the deaths of Indian mariners aboard commercial vessels targeted by the US Navy in the Strait of Hormuz. India has lodged a strong protest with the US. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a phone call with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and told him such actions against commercial shipping are not justified.
However, a readout from the State Department said that Rubio stressed that all commercial vessels should immediately comply with orders from US forces as they seek to uphold peace and security in the Strait. He underscored that violations of the US blockade and the illicit transport of Iranian oil will not be tolerated, it added.
PM Modi has also welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia. He said that the war caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries.
