Gujarat is grappling with a surge in food poisoning cases. In the latest incident, more than 400 people fell ill after a wedding feast in Dahod district’s Abhlod village, with several hospitalised. The outbreak adds to a troubling pattern of similar incidents reported across the state in recent weeks.

What Happened In Dahod?

A wedding celebration in Abhlod village, Dahod district, turned into a health emergency after over 400 guests fell ill with suspected food poisoning. Several of the affected were hospitalised, and health authorities have launched a probe to determine the cause. The exact food item responsible is yet to be officially confirmed. Dahod, a tribal-dominated district in eastern Gujarat, has seen food safety incidents at community gatherings before.

The Memnagar Hostel Scare

In a separate incident, a girls’ hostel in Memnagar, Ahmedabad, reported a suspected food poisoning case on April 5. As many as 57 students from a Patel community-run hostel were rushed to hospital after suffering from severe diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting for over a day. Within 24 hours, the total number of hospitalised students climbed to 38, with many admitted to Sterling Hospital.

The Rajpura Village Incident: A Pattern Emerges

This is not Gujarat’s first food poisoning scare this month. On April 9, nearly 100 people fell ill after consuming sev-khamani — a popular Gujarati snack — at a religious programme in Rajpura village under Detroj taluka in Ahmedabad district.

While 38 of those affected remained hospitalised, the rest were discharged after treatment, with all patients reported to be in stable condition.

Apart from those hospitalised, 214 other villagers who had consumed the same snack were given preventive treatment as a precautionary measure.

What Authorities Are Doing

Health teams have been deployed across affected areas to assess the situation and prevent further spread. Food samples have been collected and sent for laboratory testing. Investigations into all three incidents are currently ongoing, with authorities yet to officially identify the specific contaminants involved.
