More than 13 years since Grand Theft Auto V came out in 2013, Rockstar Games is ready to roll out GTA VI this November, triggering a frenzy among gamers who have eagerly waited for the next saga of the series. Rockstar Games unveiled an “Extended Look” on August 27 that showed roughly 27 minutes of gameplay footage captured on a base PlayStation 5.

With a reported budget of $2 billion, GTA VI promises to revolutionise the gaming experience with its sheer scale and record investment, dwarfing the budgets of its previous releases like Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) and GTA V (2013).

GTA VI Protagonists

GTA VI features two protagonists – Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos – who engage in various criminal activities in Vice City, a fictional town modelled after Miami, Florida. Players can switch between the game’s leads at any point of the time, although you also have the option to participate together in open-world activities or simply hang out.

Notably, GTA VI is bringing back a popular feature also seen in GTA San Andreas (2005), where Lucia and Jason’s appearance would be affected depending on their lifestyle choices. Eating and hitting the gym would affect both characters physically, which is expected to lead to alternative outcomes in the game. The relationship between Lucia and Jason will also depend on the player’s actions.

Wide Range Of Activities

The extended look showed the characters taking part in a wide variety of activities, beyond the life of crime. Just like in other GTA installments, the characters can participate in parachuting, clubbing, kayaking, scuba diving, mini-golfing and much more. The characters can also pass time doomscrolling on the in-game social media.

The map is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, with plenty of time to spend away from one objective to the next. Furthermore, the environments of GTA VI are absolutely brimming with people, and you can interact with several NPCs to trigger an event. Note: You are not the only ones carrying a weapon.

Peak Detailing

Making full use of its hardware capabilities, GTA VI is set to deliver a greater level of detail, extending beyond photorealistic faces and richly detailed environments to even the smallest interactions. For instance, hair physics have been significantly improved, with characters’ hair responding dynamically to movement and airflow. Accessories worn by the two protagonists also react naturally to their movements, which is already leagues ahead of GTA V.

While driving, the vehicles now use turn signals (indicators) while changing lanes. The map has also been upgraded, with satellite imagery replacing the “Google Maps” look of GTA V. NPCs are much more responsive and interactive than in previous games.

Crime And Wanted System

In a departure from previous games, players are now required to raise money to unlock certain missions in the game. This can be done by boosting cars, robbing stores and doing bank heists. However, carjacking won’t be as easy as in other GTA games, with vehicles now categorized by a tier system. The higher the price, tougher it will be to break into!

GTA 6 marks the return of the six-star wanted system, removing GTA V’s five-star system. This time, the cops will remember your appearance and attire through a criminal tracking system, taking inspiration from RDR 2. You can shake off the police by changing your entire outfit and getaway vehicle. Equipping a mask during heists can help you evade punishment.

RDR-Themed Interaction

The gameplay takes several gameplay elements from Red Dead Redemption 2rewarding exploration over story missions. Random events will occur naturally in the world, while you also have the option to study the wildlife. While interacting with NPCs, conversation options will appear, where you can greet or provoke people. The extended look also showed Jason petting a dog, hinting at the return of the “honour” system seen in the Red Dead Redemption series.

The safehouses have also been made much more interactive than previous games. Instead of simply changing your attire or watching TV, you can also shave your facial hair, play video games with your in-game friends, or simply take out a beer from the fridge and chill.

Choices, Choices

The story of GTA 6 will be impacted by the player’s choice, whether big or small. At the beginning of the game, Jason and Lucia appear to be in a romantic relationship. How it ends depends completely on your decisions in the game. GTA VI is specifically tailored to open-world actions rather than story missions, bringing more of each character’s background to the spotlight.

GTA VI Leaks

Prior to the extended look, GTA VI ran into trouble when a hacker operating under the name “Cyberleek” released unauthorised clips and images from what appears to be an internal development build, forcing Rockstar and Take-Two to initiate shutdowns. Rockstar has publicly addressed the situation, calling the leaks “heartbreaking” and saying it remained focused on delivering the game.

This is hardly the first time any GTA game has experienced leaks. For instance, GTA V’s gameplay was also leaked to the public way back in 2012. Sony accidentally made parts of the pre-order PS3 version available in Europe in 2013, forcing takedowns and an apology. However, with over a decade since the release of GTA V and eight years since Red Dead Redemption 2, fans have been eagerly awaiting Rockstar’s next major release, fuelling intense interest in GTA VI and amplifying leaks.
