The picture has been clarified by the Petroleum Ministry through a post on the social media platform Twitter (now X). It reads, ‘Fake news, some reports suggest increase in prices of petrol and diesel, but it is clarified that no such proposal is under consideration by the government. Such news has been spread with the aim of creating panic among the people and is misleading.
It has also been said in the statement of the ministry that India is the only country where there has been no increase in the prices of petrol and diesel in the last four years. The Government of India and public sector oil companies have consistently taken steps to protect Indian citizens from the steep rise in international prices.
Where did the news of price hike come from?
According to a Business Today report, a brokerage firm said in its note that after the ongoing state elections in India, petrol and diesel prices may see an increase of Rs 25-28 per liter, as high crude oil prices are putting pressure on the country’s fluid pricing system.
It is noteworthy that due to US-Iran War Tension, tension continues regarding the Strait of Hormuz. This is the sea route through which about 20 percent of the world’s total oil and gas consumption passes. The effect of closure of Hormuz Strait due to war has been seen in the form of oil and gas crisis in many countries and the prices of petrol and diesel have been increased in many countries.
Despite all the global tensions, petrol and diesel prices are stable in India at present. The price of 1 liter petrol in Delhi remains at Rs 94.77 per liter, diesel is Rs 87.67 per liter. Whereas in Mumbai its rate is Rs 87.67 per liter.
