There is a viral video on social media in which it is claimed that ants have started appearing near the fuel tank due to ethanol.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas rejected the rumors spreading on social media regarding ethanol fuel. The ministry said in a press briefing on Tuesday that the ethanol blending program is scientifically proven and is being continuously monitored.
Recently, a video went viral on social media in which ants were shown near the fuel tank of a vehicle. On this, the Indian Petroleum Ministry clarified that fuel grade ethanol does not contain any sugar.
According to the ministry, some people are spreading confusion among the public by re-sharing old videos and pictures on social media. The government said that no report of engine damage after pouring E20 petrol has come to light yet.

E20 petrol has no effect on vehicle insurance.
The central government has also clarified that the use of E20 petrol (20% ethanol flex fuel) does not affect the validity of vehicle insurance. The government said that such apprehensions are wrong and have been rejected after discussions with the concerned parties.
According to the government, ethanol blended fuel is being used successfully in countries like America, Brazil and Japan. In Brazil, E27 has been used as fuel for a long time.
Government enumerated 3 benefits of using ethanol
- Foreign exchange worth Rs 1.4 lakh crore left: The government said that due to the ethanol program there has been a decrease in the import of crude oil. Which has helped the country in saving foreign exchange of more than Rs 1.4 lakh crore so far.
- Benefit to farmers and rural economy: The government said the increase in demand for agricultural produce used for ethanol production has supported farmers’ income and strengthened the rural economy.
- Help in energy security and pollution control: According to the statement, ethanol fuel is helping in increasing the energy security of the country and reducing carbon emissions.
What is ethanol?
Ethanol is a type of alcohol, which is made from the fermentation of starch and sugar. It is mixed with petrol and used as eco-friendly fuel in vehicles. Ethanol is produced primarily from sugarcane juice, but ethanol can also be produced from starch containing materials such as corn, rotten potatoes, cassava, and rotten vegetables.

First Generation Ethanol: First generation ethanol is made from sugarcane juice, sweet beet, rotten potatoes, sweet sorghum and corn.
Second Generation Ethanol: Second generation ethanol is made from cellulose and lignocellulosic materials such as rice bran, wheat bran, corncob, bamboo and woody biomass.
Third Generation Biofuel: Third generation biofuel will be made from algae. Work on this is still going on.
E85 fuel was launched 15 days ago, government’s focus on biofuel

15 days ago the government had introduced E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles. The price of E85 fuel in Delhi was fixed at ₹82.12 per liter. This is a full ₹20 less than the regular E20 petrol sold in Delhi.
This fuel is a mixture in which up to 85% ethanol and 15% petrol is mixed. Now with the approval of 100% ethanol, a new chapter has started in the green energy and biofuel sector in the country. Currently, 4 types of flex-fuel are being sold in the market.
Can be used only in these selected vehicles
E85 fuel cannot be used in normal petrol vehicles. For this, the engine of the vehicles should be specifically based on ‘flex-fuel’ technology.
- Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex-Fuel: It is India’s first passenger car designed to run on blends up to E100 (100% ethanol), which is completely equivalent to E85.
- Hero Splendor+ and HF Deluxe: Hero MotoCorp has introduced the first flex-fuel motorcycle in the country’s mass-market 100cc segment. These bikes can run on fuel ranging from E20 to E85 and their sale will start in Delhi and some areas of Maharashtra from July 2026.
- Suzuki Gixxer SF: This bike is also included in this list which supports high-ethanol fuel.
