Google is making one of Gemini’s most personalised AI image features available for free to more users. The company has started rolling out its Nano Banana-powered personalised image generation tool to eligible free users in the US after previously limiting it to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers. The feature lets users create AI-generated images with much shorter prompts by using context from their connected Google services.
Gemini’s image generation is powered by its Personal Intelligence feature, which helps the AI understand a user’s preferences using information from connected Google services. So, instead of describing every little detail in a prompt, users can simply ask Gemini to create images based on their interests, memories or lifestyle, as long as they have given the necessary permissions.
How the feature works
According to Google, Personal Intelligence is powered by its Nano Banana image generation model and can connect with services including Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Google Search to provide more personalised responses and image generation. The company says this enables Gemini to understand a user’s preferences and context without requiring lengthy instructions.
For example, a user can simply type, “Design my dream house”, instead of explaining their preferred architecture, colours or decor. Similarly, someone can ask Gemini to “Create an illustration of me and my favourite things”, and the app can automatically use photos stored in Google Photos instead of requiring users to upload images manually.
How to use it
To use the feature, users must first enable Personal Intelligence and connect supported Google services to Gemini. Google notes that the feature is entirely optional and requires users to opt in before Gemini can access any personal data.
Once enabled, Gemini can use context from connected apps such as Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Google Search to generate personalised images. Users can choose which Google apps Gemini is allowed to access and can revoke permissions or switch off Personal Intelligence at any time through the Gemini app’s Tools menu.
Google emphasises that users remain in control of their data and can adjust these settings whenever they want.
Available only for eligible users
Despite making the feature free, Google has not rolled it out globally. The company says personalised Nano Banana-powered image generation is currently available only to eligible users in the United States. Google has not announced when the feature will expand to other regions.
The rollout also applies only to users who are eligible for Personal Intelligence. While Google has expanded the broader Personal Intelligence feature to countries including India and Japan in recent months, the free personalised image generation capability has, for now, been limited to users in the US.
