AI has evolved rapidly over the past few years, but early tech giants are increasingly concerned about its long-term risks. Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, known as the ‘Godfather’ of AI, has warned that AI can destroy human civilization within the next decade i.e. 10 years.

Speaking in a program, computer scientist Hinton said that the probability of this happening is about 10%. However, he also admitted that there is no sure way to accurately estimate this danger.

It is difficult to assess the risk accurately right now

Hinton said that the estimate of 10% risk is not wrong in my opinion. He further said that it would not be right to keep the risk figure much lower than this, because at present no one knows how to assess this risk accurately.

The danger of 30-50 years now comes to 10 years

Hinton revealed that there has been a big change in the timeline of threats posed by AI. Earlier he believed that it would take 30 to 50 years for AI to pose a threat to human existence. Later he reduced this time to 10 to 20 years.

Now he believes that this threat may emerge in the next 10 years or less. He also admitted that many researchers’ estimates are for an even shorter period.

AI companies accused of ‘playing with human lives’

Hinton’s warning about the dangers of AI has come at a time when the global debate on this issue has intensified. Recently, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from his post. Coxon estimated that there was more than a 10% chance of AI destroying humans within 10 years.

He accused AI companies of playing with the lives of humans in the race to create self-improving superintelligence. Apart from this, Anthropic’s safety researcher Evan Hubinger has also said that the probability of danger is more than 10%.

There is a strong need for global rules: international cooperation is the only solution

Hinton says the future could go in two different directions. If the risks are managed properly, AI can also bring huge benefits to society. For this he demanded strict rules and cooperation at the international level.

According to Hinton, all countries have a common interest in preventing advanced AI systems from going out of human control. The biggest question is whether the governments of the world will be able to come together and make its rules at the right time.
