Goa Tourism Minister, Rohan Khaunte, has advocated for curbs on social media use for children under 16, arguing that overexposure to platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and online gaming is negatively affecting youngsters and eroding real-life social interaction in society.
Speaking on the issue to NDTV Profitthe minister said he was among the first to raise concerns over social media usage among minors in his capacity as Goa’s IT Minister.

He said several parents have approached the government expressing worry about children developing unhealthy habits at a young age due to excessive screen time and social media dependency.
According to him, India must protect its demographic dividend by ensuring that young people grow up with the right direction and values.
Khaunte stressed that if the country’s youth become “directionless”, achieving the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” would become difficult.
While advocating restrictions on entertainment-based social media platforms and gaming apps for those under 16, he clarified that educational digital tools, Google and AI-based learning platforms would continue to remain accessible for students.
The minister said social media platforms and online games should not become priorities for children during their formative years.
He also revealed that he has been in discussions with Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on the matter and is preparing a formal representation to the Centre seeking policy intervention under the ambit of the IT Act.
Khaunte added that Goa has already prepared a detailed framework outlining what should and should not be permitted for minors online, and the state’s inputs have also been shared with other states.
He expressed confidence that with support from the Centre, a broader national framework on regulating social media access for children could eventually benefit the entire country.
