Gen-Z protesters in Nepal have chosen Sushila Karki as the interim PM of the country. He was sworn in by the President on Friday night. She became the first woman PM of the country in 220 years of history.

Earlier, Sushila has been the Chief Justice of the Nepal Supreme Court. She is known for strict attitude against corruption. In 2017, when the Prachanda government brought impeachment to remove them, thousands of people took to the streets in support of Sushila.

The government was forced to withdraw its decision. Sushila’s husband had a plane hijack 52 years ago, which was discussed in India.

Sushila started her career as a teacher and later became a judge. When Sushila became the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal in 2016, it was historic in itself.

A year later in 2017, he was brought to an impeachment motion in Parliament. It was alleged that she is standing against political pressure from decisions and misusing the independence of the judiciary.

In fact, the leaders were afraid that if Karki continued to show such strictness in the court, then they could suffer a big loss to politics and power. Therefore, the Prachanda government tried to remove them from the post by bringing impeachment motion in Parliament.

After the impeachment motion, hundreds of students, women and common people took to the streets of Kathmandu. The Supreme Court also gave a historic order that Sushila Karki cannot be prevented from working until the impeachment hearing is complete.

In June 2017, Parliament withdrew impeachment motion just one day before his retirement.

Even before becoming the Chief Justice, she had become popular in public eyes on her decisions. He prevented surrogacy in Chief Nepal from making business.

In 2015, he gave an important decision on surrogacy (fare womb) by the Nepal Supreme Court. At that time, a bench of Justice Sushila Karki said that surrogacy cannot be allowed to become business and poor women are being exploited.

The court stopped surrogacy with immediate effect. This step was especially important because after the ban in India, foreign couples were coming to Nepal and conducting surrogacy.

After the verdict, Nepal surrendered from becoming a stronghold of surrogacy tourism and the government was entrusted with the responsibility of enacting laws on it.

Husband did the plane hijack

Sushila of studies met Durga Prasad Subedi at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi. From there, the relationship between them started and reached the wedding. Sushila and her husband Durga Subedi have been associated with many movement.

Durga Prasad Subedi hijacked the plane on 10 June 1973, in which 22 people were aboard. Among them were Nepal actor couple CP Lohani and India’s famous actress Mala Sinha. Subedi, along with Nagendra Dhungel and Basant Bhattarai, hijacked the plane.

The real purpose of this hijacking was not to harm the passengers, but to rob the cash that was being brought from the banks of Birtnagar. Government money of Rs 32 lakh was present in the aircraft. This money would have strengthened the ongoing armed movement against King Mahendra’s monarchy.

The mastermind of this operation was Girija Prasad Koirala, who later became the Prime Minister of Nepal. As soon as the aircraft landed in Farbisganj (Bihar), people already waiting on the land became active. Cash -filled boxes were taken off and transported to Darjeeling by road. The aircraft was then allowed to fly with the remaining passengers.

This first hijacking in the history of Nepal was in discussion for a long time. Within a year, all the kidnappers except Nagendra Dhungel were arrested in India. Durga Prasad Subedi was sentenced to two years and was released during the Emergency in 1975. Karki always made her own identity despite her husband’s disputed past.

Memories of BHU alive in heart

Regarding her association with India, Sushila said in an interview that she has studied in BHU and the memories there are still alive in her heart. He recalled his teachers and friends and mentioned the days spent in the hostel on the banks of the Ganges river.

She told that she used to sit on the roof at the summer nights and look at the flowing Ganga. She also said that she is a resident of Baratnagar, which is very close to the border of India. Just 40 km away. So she often used to go to the border market. They also know Hindi, even if not very well.

India-Nepal’s relationship strong, many relatives live in India

On the relationship between India and Nepal, he said that the relations between the two countries are very old. The governments may keep changing, but the relationship between the people of both countries is very deep. Many of his relatives and familiar lives in India, and if something happens to him, then the people of Nepal also get tears.

He had said that India has always helped Nepal and there is deep affinity and love between the two countries. According to him, as the utensils in the kitchen are together, there is a sound, so there are small differences, but the relationship between India and Nepal is strong.
