A judicial commission headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court will be constituted to investigate the death of singer Zubeen Garg, sources told News18 on Friday.

Garg died under mysterious circumstances on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore. He had travelled to the country to attend the fourth edition of the North East India Festival, an event organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his company.

The circumstances of his death have sparked widespread outrage in Assam, prompting multiple investigations.

This latest development comes after reports that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax (I-T) Department are expected to join the Assam Police in probing alleged organised financial crimes and benami property holdings linked to Mahanta, one of the key accused in the case.

Sources told PTI that officials from both central agencies have already visited the CID headquarters in Guwahati to examine the financial aspects of the ongoing investigation.

“The ED and the I-T department have visited the CID office and discussed the case with senior officials. They are likely to join the probe with CID, and a formal decision may come very soon,” a source said.

So far, four people have been arrested in connection with Garg’s death. On Thursday, the CID arrested Garg’s band members, Shekharjyoti Goswami (drummer) and Amritprabha Mahanta (co-singer), after multiple rounds of questioning. Both were reportedly present on the yacht in Singapore at the time of the incident.

Earlier, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta were arrested in Delhi and brought to Assam. Murder charges have been invoked against the duo.
