Garima Saikia Garg, wife of late Assamese music legend Zubeen Garghas issued a firm public statement following proceedings in Singapore’s Coroner’s Court, asserting that her family’s pursuit of the full truth behind his death remains uncompromising and ongoing across jurisdictions.
Her statement follows the January 14 hearing in Singapore, where authorities disclosed that Zubeen Garg drowned on September 19, 2025, near Lazarus Island during a private yacht outing. Evidence presented indicated that Garg had allegedly consumed alcohol at levels exceeding four times the legal limit, declined to wear a properly fitted life jacket, and entered the sea alone.
Singapore authorities told the court that toxicology reports showed prescription medication for hypertension and epilepsy, with no illicit substances detected. They reiterated that there was no suspicion of foul play and that the inquiry is likely to conclude the death as a case of “misadventure”.
In her statement, Garima Garg emphasised that the family’s actions have been “lawful, relentless, and ongoing”, stressing that there would be “no hesitation, no compromise” in seeking accountability. She said the family chose to place facts transparently before the public in response to widespread concern and unresolved questions surrounding the incident.
Garima drew attention to the Assam Police Special Investigation Team’s findings, noting that a chargesheet exceeding 2,500 pages has been filed invoking murder-related provisions against seven accused, including event organisers, the artist’s manager, and others. The SIT has alleged financial motives behind the acts leading to Garg’s death.
She urged the Government of India and the Assam government to monitor the Singapore proceedings at the highest levels, pursue appropriate diplomatic and legal measures to ensure all relevant facts are placed before the court, and expedite prosecution in India based on the SIT’s conclusions.
At the Singapore hearing, Zubeen Garg’s uncle, Manoj Kumar Borthakur, submitted detailed questions regarding the planning of the yacht outing, safety compliance, delays in medical response, and the evidentiary basis for ruling out foul play.
The matter continues on parallel legal tracks: a coroner’s inquiry in Singapore, limited to determining the cause of death, and criminal proceedings in Assam examining culpability and motive.
Garima Garg’s statement has renewed public scrutiny and intensified the #JusticeForZubeenGarg campaign across social media platforms, as calls for accountability continue in both jurisdictions.
